The efforts of the Mundingburra State School students were well supported by their teacher Erick Blechen, the Townsville Bulletin and ABC radio. The students now seek to use their success with their Calendar to get the message out to the wider community.

The other Australian Recycled Cartonboard 2005 National Schools competition finalists were:

  • Milbrodale Primary School (Milbrodale, Hunter Region, NSW)
  • Milgate Primary School (Melbourne)

Phil Enright, National Coordinator of the Australian Recycled Cartonboard National Schools Competition said, “The achievement of this small school and community, seems all the more remarkable because of its limited size and resources.

The competition was judged on essentially 3 criteria;

  • Communicating the message that ‘Recycling only works, if you buy recycled too!’
  • The creativity achieved in communicating the message and,
  • The extent to which the students engage their community to communicate the message
