2008 Highly Commended

The ‘Highly Commended Finalist’ runner’s up were
Greenbank State School and Hall State School.

Students at Greenbank State School took up the challenge with an enormous mural to communicate all key messages and that ‘Recycling only works …. if you buy recycled too!’. The mural also tells all who use it, which grocery products have drawn upon the community’s recycling efforts for packaging their products to us in the supermarket. To add entertainment value to their message, the students performed and recorded an incredibly professionally entertaining jingle, ‘Reuse’.

Most importantly though, the students created a highly intrusive, multi-dimensional strategy that has changed the behaviours of the entire school community; not just recycling, but also creating an exchange for items when the current owner’s use is concluded.

Students at The Hall State School took up the challenge with an enormous mosaic to communicate all key messages and that ‘Recycling only works …. if you buy recycled too!’. The efforts of the The Hall students were well supported by volunteer parents and their teacher, Kerry Hinsch.

Most importantly though, the students created a highly intrusive, multi-dimensional strategy that has changed the behaviours of the entire school community; not just packaging and product recycling, but addressing CO2 emissions and the totality of waste management, the composting of organic matter included. As well, the student’s campaign identified products drawing upon the community’s recycling efforts for their packaging, presenting them ‘awards’ for doing so.
