Winner of $10,000 National Schools Competition Coombabah State High School Year 12 Drama Class winning entry tells us, ‘You’ve got the whole world in your hands’ …….. So it’s up to us all to make a real difference for a sustainable future
Phil Enright, National Coordinator of the Australian Recycled Cartonboard National Schools Competition said, “To win this Competition, the group has to excel in producing an extraordinary audience-engaging presentation that emotionally and intellectually leverages their audience. The message has to persuade a change in the behaviour, not just of the community, but industry as well. That is a big ask.”
The class wrote, produced, presented and filmed their musical (entry) at the School’s inaugural Arts evening, “The Art of Dreams” to an audience of over 400 of the local and school community.
Enright shared the judges’ assessment, “The performance not only showcased the student’s exceptional musical, staging and acting talents, but creatively integrated and delivered a well researched series of facts which could not help but motivate the audience to make changes in their own behaviour, and demand a whole lot more change from industry and government to realise a truly sustainable future for us all; highlighting the simple undeniable truth, the future of ‘the whole world is in our hands’.
“The stark contrast within the performance, suddenly and graphically presenting the facts, good and bad, but from the musical context of a song we all find incredibly entertaining, made the message all the more impactful – ‘Each tonne of paper recycled (into recycled packaging) saves, 13 trees, 2.5 barrels of oil, 4100kWh of electricity, 4 cubic meters of landfill and 31,780 litres of water.
“Such a magnificent presentation of relatively unknown, but compelling facts to which we can all relate, demands more than spin from government and industry to deliver the peace our community craves from realising our much needed sustainable future.
“With the support of one of our most committed and gifted teacher/motivators, Melanie Woolnough, Head of Department of Arts, the rehearsed, polished and passionate performance,
